Why speaking practice matters for Chinese

Mandarin has four tones, and a word’s meaning changes with its tone. Apps can drill characters, but tones only stick when you speak and get feedback from real people.

Chinese is spoken by about 1.1 billion (Mandarin) people in China, Taiwan, Singapore and Chinese communities worldwide.

Useful Chinese phrases for your first room

Say these out loud. Nobody minds mistakes: everyone in the room is learning too.

  • 你好吗?(Nǐ hǎo ma?)how are you?
  • 请再说一遍 (Qǐng zài shuō yí biàn)please say it again
  • …用中文怎么说?(… yòng Zhōngwén zěnme shuō?)how do you say… in Chinese?
  • 我在学中文 (Wǒ zài xué Zhōngwén)I’m learning Chinese

Tip for Chinese learners

Don’t be shy about tones. Say the word, then ask “对吗?” (duì ma? — is that right?). Native speakers are usually happy to help.
